[Reflection] Yeseul Ashley Choi - Passion in Action
I joined the Green Tree Club because I wanted to focus my volunteer work on helping vulnerable people. It happened to be that my friends already were in this club, so I decided to join this club immediately. I was especially drawn to the unique opportunity to volunteer using my own skills - coding, academics, music, and dance - in ways that actually contain substances. Unlike other volunteer clubs, this one lets me dive into my passions and volunteering simultaneously.
One memorable experience was working with children from the Life-Giving Tree Organization during Dance Camp, a project where Green Tree teamed up with the Dance Club. I thought it would be similar to other times I’ve taught dance, but it was different because this time, we planned and organized the whole camp together. It was a new experience in teamwork, and I felt a different kind of excitement. We had a mix of kids—young and older, boys and girls, some eager to learn and others a bit more reserved. Keeping them all engaged was a challenge, but we threw ourselves into it, and they eventually warmed up, following the moves and showing real progress. Watching them perform at the end was so rewarding, knowing I’d helped them grow through something I love.
I’d love to keep doing projects like this, but I also have ideas for new ones. A coding camp where we teach programming languages or robotics through Scratch or Entry would be amazing. We could also consider teaching English, math, or science, which would allow us to share our academic knowledge. Beyond academics, I think organizing a sports day or a fun day focused purely on creating joyful memories would be valuable. It’d be a nice break from academic stuff and would give us all, kids and volunteers, some unforgettable experiences.
I’m also really interested in helping seniors, especially since South Korea’s aging population is growing fast. Many seniors struggle with new technology, so as young people, we could help bridge that gap by introducing them to tools that make life easier and help them stay connected. The Green Tree Club could even develop simple tech solutions specifically for them, using our programming skills to meet their needs. Many elderly people also live alone, so just spending time with them and helping with everyday tasks could make a huge difference in their lives.
This club has given me a chance to use my skills in ways that really matter, and I’m excited to see what more we can accomplish together.
